Somerset Fine Wines & Gifts, in London Ontario, combines a lovely gift shop with a "home made wine" outlet. This outlet is fairly representative of this kind of commercial venture. Their products range in price according to the length of time required to ferment the wines.
Upon entering the store you see their gift shop, which is really very good. Their products include wine glasses, wine sets in wooden cases, bottle openers. Well you get the point, most items are wine related. You really should check out these types of gift shops as they do carry some unique items not easily found elsewhere.
The back of the store is devoted to the making of wine. Your first step is to choose which type of wine you would like to make. You need to consider whether you want to make a white or red wine that is ready to drink once it has fermented, or one that needs to be cellared for anywhere from 6 weeks to 6 months.
Some of the brand names this company carries are: Cru, Cellar Craft, and Cellar Classics. While we would have preferred to sample some of the products before making a decision, this was not possible due to laws governing these businesses.
In this home made wine store, the retailer does most of the work for you. Once you have made your choice, you will be helped through the process by one of the staff. Your main job that first day, is to sprinkle the yeast to start the fermentation. You are now officially a wine maker!
During the next few weeks, while the wine is setting up, the staff take care of all that is needed. Once the wine is ready, you return to the store, and proceed to bottle and label your product. You can bring your own bottles and labels, or purchase them on site at a very reasonable cost.
The batch you make will be enough for 30 bottles. So you really better like this drink or have a lot of friends who would like a bottle or two! The real benefit if you consume a lot of wine and love one kind enough, then the price is very reasonable. With the wine, bottle, cork, and label the cost can be as low as about $4.00 per bottle.
When making such a large batch, friends often take this on as a very enjoyable pastime sharing the costs as well as the benefits!
